Market info from Charles

Randy,
Below are some possible markets. There are certainly others that you can find online if you search for “horror fiction markets.”
First, though, there is a local editor who does his own newsletter, who is looking for contributors in non-fiction that is related to the SF, fantasy, horror genres. His name is Bret Funk, and he’s always looking for writers. I do a column on writing for him, but he also runs book and movie reviews, opinion pieces and so on. I don’t think he pays for book reviews and such, but he sometimes runs fiction contests that pay. You should check out the newsletter, which is free, and consider submitting some reviews or something to him. It could earn you a few publications that you could mention in submission letters for your fiction. The webpage address for Bret Funk is: http://www.tyrannosauruspress.com/Illuminata/Illuminata.html You can check out copies of the newsletter here or click the link to “contribute” to see his guidelines and stuff. I’ve found him easy to work with.
OTHER MARKETS:
1. Here’s a link that lists a bunch of markets for genre stuff. I think these are all paying markets. http://www.fictionfactor.com/fiction2.html
2. Another set of market listings: http://home.att.net/~p.fleming/Sfmarket.html
3. Some various markets that I’ve picked up are below:
Kenoma E-zine? See Website. Editor: H.F. Gibbard. Bimonthly. Fiction: "Kenoma E-zine welcomes submissions of short stories related to the theme of speculative fiction and myth. Stories must meet the following criteria:" "Stories must contain a mythical element. Normally this means either mythic archetypes (heroes, gods, saints, wizards, ?magic? items, etc.) or mythic themes (a heroic quest, a subterranean journey, battle between good and evil, death and resurrection, etc.)" "Stories must take place in the present (1900 A.D. forward) or the future, and in everyday (i.e. non-magical) world settings. I do not want fantasy stories set in medieval worlds. The concept here is the mythic erupting unexpectedly into the ?real? modern-day world that you and I inhabit every day. ?Speculative fiction? means science fiction, fantasy, horror, or magic realism." "Taboos: No pornography, graphic violence, racism, sexism, anti-Semitism, or political extremism, please. Stories with religious themes are welcomed, provided they meet with the above guidelines. Morality is also welcome but not overt or annoying forms of moralizing." 1000?7500 words; pays $10, for "first electronic rights, but will consider a reprint in exceptional cases. Poetry: "Same general criteria as above." To 40 lines; pays $5. Query for longer poetry. "Please E-mail all submissions, pasted into the body of the E-mail, formatted in plain text. The subject line of your E-mail should include the word ?submission?." [E-mail: editor@kenomazine.com; www.kenomazine.com].
Book of Dark Wisdom? Elder Signs Press, P.O. Box 389, Lake Orion MI 48361-0389. Editor: William Jones. "Book of Dark Wisdom is changing its format. The first two issues were dedicated to horror gaming and fiction. Starting with issue #3, Book of Dark Wisdom is going to a fiction format." "It is a tri-annual print magazine with a full color, glossy cover and 88 interior pages. We publish Dark Fiction and are particularly interested in Lovecraftian and Mythos styled works. Stories can be set in any time period. We have nothing against science fiction, fantasy, or historical fiction stories? so long as they are stylishly dark and appropriate for the magazine. If you?re unsure of what we like, review a copy before submitting. All stories submitted must be well written and within the word count." Short Fiction: "We prefer stories of 5000 words or less. However, we are open to larger works, providing they are well done and deserve the increased size. Please query for stories over 5000 words before submitting. We also consider ?flash? fiction and short shorts. At the present, Book of Dark Wisdom is not accepting serial or novella length works. This might change in the future, so keep an eye on our guidelines page." To 5000 words; pays 1˘/word, with minimum of $5, on publication for First North American Publication Rights and sometimes first electronic rights. Poetry: "We accept innovative poetry with a dark flare. We desire insightful works that spark emotion and imagination." 150 words maximum; pays $2, on publication for First North American Publication Rights and sometimes first electronic rights. Nonfiction: "Our interest in nonfiction submissions is mainly book, film, and the occasional music review. We prefer reviews related to the topics of the magazines. Reviews need to be concise and well written, entertaining and insightful." 1500 words maximum; pays 1˘/word, on publication for First North American Publication Rights and sometimes first electronic rights." General: "We accept text submissions in Word format or RTF. JPGs or TIFFs (preferred) can be submitted electronically. Do not send files over 1 MB without contacting us first. All mail submissions should include instructions for dealing with manuscripts and artwork if not accepted. If you wish it returned, include an SASE (with proper postage). If you wish it destroyed, clearly state such in a cover letter." [E-mail: submissions@darkwisdom.com; www.darkwisdom.com]. Dragons, Knights, and Angels: The Magazine of Christian Fantasy and Science Fiction?See Web site. Editor: Rebecca Shelley. "DKA Magazine is founded on the idea that the power of God is the greatest magic of all. While the stories we publish do not need to have an obvious moral, the protagonists must be motivated by moral values or learn some moral value by the end of the story." "This is a family magazine, so keep that in mind with regard to language and content of the stories you submit. Please no profanity. Absolutely no sex. If sex is integral to the plot, you can bet that?s not the story for us." "Remember: A short story needs a beginning, middle, and end and must have conflict. A huge percentage of stories we get are about someone on the verge of dying or someone who has just died. We also get a lot of Michael Archangel vs devil/demon stories. You?re likely to stand out from the crowd if you steer away from these themes. We are getting too many poems that are either Christian themed but not Science Fiction and Fantasy, or that are SF & F, but have no Christian elements in them. We are looking for a mix of the two. The majority of the poems we reject are for this reason." "DKA Magazine will accept submissions only during our reading periods: October, January, April, and July. In October, we read for our Christmas issue. The other issues are un-themed unless otherwise noted here." To 2000 words (fiction), pays 1˝˘/word, 2001?4000 words, $30; $10 (poem); online publication: $5 (stories), $1 (poems), on acceptance for FNASR and one-time electronic rights. E-mail only please. E-mail submission guidelines: Please send your stories as attachments in WordPerfect (.WPD), RTF, or Word (.DOC). Sorry no WPS files. Our computers can?t read them. We will not open attachments in other formats (this is for virus control). If you can?t do one of those formats, then send your story in the body of the E-mail. We do, however, prefer the story as an attachment because it saves hours of work formatting should your story be accepted." "Every reading period we have someone submit with an E-mail address that bounces. Please include your snail-mail address and phone number so DKA Magazine can respond to your submission if the E-mail does not work for some reason. No simultaneous or multiple submissions. No reprints. [E-mail: Submissions: dkamagazine@quixnet.net; home.quixnet.net/~dshelley/]. |
